This is an “experimental” piece that I made on a one week course with Mike Abbott.  The chair is made from cleaved logs of unseasoned ash and is shaped using very simple hand tools and steam bending.  The most stiking thing about the construction of this chair is that no glue is used – the joints rely for their tightness on the natural shrinkage of the mortices as the wood dries.  The seat of this chair is woven from the “bast” (inner bark) of Wych Elm.  The chair has a light oil finish.

I like this chair a lot but I prefer a slightly more refined finish so am not sure if I will ever make another one quite like it.  There is no doubt, though, that the ergonomics of this chair are superb and Iam sure I will use some of its key features in more conventional chairs in the future.
